Disclaimer: Service and Technical Limitations
Last updated: 11 October 2026
SmartPDF is a general-purpose tool provided free of charge. Please read these limitations so you know what to expect and can decide whether it suits your document.
What SmartPDF changes — and what it doesn’t
- SmartPDF adds content (text, highlights, drawings, shapes, images and drawn signatures) on top of existing pages. Its Edit text tool changes existing text line by line by covering the original line with the page’s background color and drawing the new wording on top. Paragraphs do not reflow, the replacement uses a standard font that may differ from the original, and the original text objects remain in the file.
- Placing a shape or image over existing content does not remove that content. It can still be extracted. SmartPDF is not a redaction tool and must not be used to hide confidential information.
- Additions are written as page content, not as separate PDF comment objects.
Signatures
- A drawn signature is an image. It is not a certificate-based digital signature and does not on its own prove identity, consent or that a document hasn’t been altered.
- Editing a PDF that contains a digital signature invalidates that signature.
- Whether a drawn signature is legally sufficient depends on your jurisdiction and the document. This is not legal advice.
Supported files
- Maximum 100 MB and 2,000 pages per document; very large files may still exceed the memory available on some devices.
- Password-protected and permission-restricted PDFs can’t be edited.
- Scanned pages can be made editable with in-browser text recognition (OCR, English and Arabic). Recognition accuracy depends on scan quality; handwriting is not supported. The original scan image stays in the file under any edits.
- Dynamic XFA forms may not display correctly. Interactive form fields are kept but not filled in by the editor.
- Inserted images: PNG, JPEG or WebP, up to 15 MB each; large photos are downscaled.
Text and fonts
- Added and edited text uses bundled open fonts that are metric-compatible with Arial/Helvetica, Times New Roman, Calibri, Cambria and Courier New (regular, bold, italic). They are embedded in the downloaded PDF and support Western European characters. Text in other fonts is matched to the closest of these, so the letter shapes may differ slightly.
- Text in other scripts (such as Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Chinese) or emoji is exported as a high-resolution image of the text: it looks correct but is not selectable or searchable.
Browser environment
SmartPDF needs a modern browser with JavaScript enabled. Results can vary across browsers and devices. Browser-based processing keeps documents off our servers but can’t protect against malware or untrusted extensions on your device. We don’t provide offline support.
Accuracy
Always review your downloaded PDF before sending, printing or relying on it. Guides on this site are general information, not professional or legal advice.
