About SmartPDF
SmartPDF is a free online PDF editor built around one idea: your documents should stay with you.
Why we built it
Most people only need to make small changes to a PDF — fill in a form, sign a letter, highlight a few paragraphs. Yet many online editors require uploading the whole document to a remote server first, often along with an account. For contracts, payslips, medical forms and school records, that’s an uncomfortable trade.
SmartPDF takes a different approach. The editor runs inside your web browser: it opens the PDF on your device, lets you make your changes there, and creates the edited file on your device too. Your document is not uploaded to our servers.
What SmartPDF does
- Add text with a choice of fonts, sizes, colors and alignment.
- Highlight areas, draw freehand, and add rectangles, ellipses, lines and arrows.
- Insert images and drawn signatures.
- Undo and redo every change, then download a standard PDF.
We’re deliberately honest about the limits, too: SmartPDF changes existing text one line at a time by covering it and writing the new words on top (the old text stays in the file), it doesn’t reflow paragraphs, recognize text in scans, or create certificate-based digital signatures. The disclaimer lists the technical limitations in detail.
How it’s funded
SmartPDF is free. To cover running costs we may show advertising on our informational pages, clearly labelled and kept away from the editor and its buttons. Advertising never has access to your documents, because your documents never leave your browser. Read more in our cookie and advertising information.
Our principles
- Privacy by design — process locally, collect as little as possible, and never put document content in analytics.
- No dark patterns — no fake download buttons, no forced sign-ups, no artificial limits on the free tools.
- Accessible to everyone — keyboard support, screen reader labels and a touch-friendly mobile layout.
